Company History

Situated a few kilometers from Montebello della Battaglia in Oltrepò Pavese’s foothills, Caselleone farm covers a land of approximately 100 hectares cultivated wheat and durum wheat, alfalfa and corn. Caselleone is an historic farm with deep roots in the local agricolture, which through the initiative of the young Matteo Dollfus, has in the recent years embarked on a new road, integrating the traditional farm production with vines for wine production. So, in 2001, after more than 30 years, was given new life to the historical vineyards Pantaleone, which gave the name to the first wine made in vintage 2005.

Caselleone farm, originally owned by the Borromeo family, is situated in Casatisma (PV) and is composed by a flat part, cultivated wheat, corn, beets and alfalfa, and a hill part of vineyard, which was purchased in 1930 by Count Giancarlo Borromeo. The estate is now owned by Giancarlo Borromeo’s grandaughter Francesca Medici di Marignano, which has intrusted its management to his son Matteo Dollfus de Volckersberg. Located in the Oltrepò Pavese DOC wine area in the foothills, since 2001 Caselleone has been seeeking renewal extending the structure and improving the quality of the vineyards, which strecht over 13 hectares of hillside property. Beetween 2001 and 2003, Croatina, Barbera and Pinot Nero vine varities were planted (at the density of 5000 plants per hectare), and in the coming years will begin the renovation of the nineteen-century cellar situated in Casatisma, that will act as the central structure of the estate. Caselleone expects to achieve in the short term, a production of about 100,000 bottles per year for both domestic and foreign market.

The territory

Oltrepò Pavese, largest wine area of the Lombardia region, is a land of ancient winemaking traditions which slowly but increasingly being able to demonstrate its enourmous potential. The vastness and complexity as wine area rise to considerable differences of soil, altitude and microclimate that makes natural the cultivation of different grape varieties. Among these, the Pinot Noir, a grape variety as able as hard, tried and abendoned in many famous vine-gowing areas of he world, has found in Oltrepò Pavese a perfect habitat. This variety has now assumed such great importance that today Oltrepò Pavese is the largest wine area cultivating it, after Burgundy. We also must not forget about the symbol grape variety of this area: Croatina, that has a really high quality profile and which gives rise to a very well-known sparkling red wine, the Bonarda, bu that is starting to express as excellent still wine, also very suitable to be aged.

Pantaleone Pinot Nero

Pinot Nero, that has always been considered one of the most noble grape variety for winemaking, has found in Oltrepò Pavese an ideal location to best express its own characteristics. Caselleone carefully choses in its own vineyards situated in Montebello della Battaglia only the best grapes for the production of Pantaleone Pinot Nero. For Pantaleone Pinot Nero there’s first a winemaking by a quite long maceration with daily pump overs, and then is aged for 12 month in french oak tonneaux, 6 moths in stainless still befre completing its maturation in bottle for almest 6 months. In this wine Pinot Nero express in an excellent way its own peculiarities with intense variety falvours a surprising delicacy of tannins. Versatile wine particulary suitable to important first courses such as soups.

Pantaleone Croatina

Croatina is the main Oltrepò Pavese ‘s grape variety where has been cultivated for centuries. Caselleone grows this variety in Montebello della Battaglia (PV), with almost 100% of it with a traditional winemaking through long mecerations.

APantaleone Croatina is aged in french oak tonneaux for 12 months, stays for 6 month in stainless still before resting for almost 6 months in bottle. In this wine we find a great expression of the potential of a grape variety such is Croatina, very suitable to make wines of graeat structure and elegance, wih a high disposition to aging.

It’s a wine for special occasions, and it perfectly matches with game based and substance dishes.

Pantaleone Croatina

Merlot della Provincia di Pavia

Merlot is very famous for its great ability to give very full-bodied wines with a powerful tasting imprint, carachterized by fruity and spicy notes. In our area, Merlot feels the terroir and theexposition, which affect very much its structure and the smoothness of the tannins.

Caselleone has this variety planted in its vineyards in Montebello della Battaglia (PV), in the first hills, with a perfect exposition in a franco-clay soil The winemaking of grapes 100% Merlot is done traditionally by a long maceration. Merlot Caselleone is then aged in stainless stell for one year, and a minumum of 6 months in bottle. It fits well many moments, and matches perfectly both first dishes and meat based dishes.

Pantaleone Croatina

Bonarda d.o.c.

Bonarda is a sparkling red wine and is the main Oltrepò Pavese ‘s wine where it’s produced from grape Croatina (also called Bonarda); it’s so diffused in this area and in all the north of Italy for his great matching with the most important regional foods, like salame, fat cheeses and soups. Caselleone grows this variety in Montebello della Battaglia (PV), with almost 100% of it with a traditional winemaking through a quite intensive maceration and a complete fermentation.

This is followed by a second fermentation at the starting of the spring, in March, made starting with sweet grape must .This second fermentation gives much freshness, both in odor and taste.Bonarda is then aged in bottles for some months, and is soon in the year ready to be enjoyed.In this wine there’s the typical expression of the Croatina, which makes a full-bodied wine with a red berry fruity nose, coexisting with a freshness due to its sparkling nature, and a perfect balance of its acidity making the wine very suitable for a lots of moments, including aperitif.

Pantaleone Croatina

Pinot Nero in Bianco

Pinot Nero, has found in Oltrepò Pavese an ideal location to best express its own characteristics. In this area it’s mostly used for white winemaking. In the higher areas of Oltrepò the production is oriented for sparkling wines. In the lower and wormer areas such Montebello della Battaglia, where Caselleone owns its vineyards, the grape maturation is suitable for great white wines production. The grapes are manually harvested in end of august. After destemming, grapes are soft pressed at a low temperature. A solw fermentation is operated to guarantee an intense aroma and preserving the Pinot Nero nose carachteristics. After the fermentation Pinot Nero in Bianco stays for almost 6 months over fine yeasts. During the summer it’s bottled, and then aged some months in bottle. In this wine Pinot Nero express in an excellent way its own peculiarities in white winemaking with intense and fresh variety fruity flavours and a nice chalky nouance, good structure and a great long-lasting taste.
